From the Nishinippon Newspaper, Jan 18, 2002: In this translation, he expresses the beautiful resonance of Chuya’s words, and the sense of rhythm deriving from the repetition of five and seven syllable units, through the use of English rhyme and the repetition of similarly pronounced words… Because rhythm is so important to Chûya’s poetry, this must have been quite an undertaking. It is truly wonderful.
From the Yomiuri Newspaper, Aug 18, 2002: Since simply translating the meaning is not enough, he reread the poetry countless times, and stressed the sense of rhythm, too… Beville’s translation has been highly lauded. |
