Poems of Days Past
by Ry Beville This bilingual book marks the first complete English translation of Nakahara Chûya’s second volume of poetry, Arishi hi no uta ( 在りし日の歌 ). The book includes an introduction in which Beville outlines Chûya’s life and work, and justifies his “verse translation” approach to many of the poems. With varying success he attempts to convey structural devices of the original– what many call the music of the poetry– while attaining to the literal meanings as well. |

Poems of the Goat
by Ry Beville Beville’s first translation of Nakahara Chûya, this book marks the first complete English edition of the poet’s first volume of poetry, Yagi no uta ( 山羊の歌 ). The book includes an introduction to the poet, an essay on translating, and notes to the poems. Albeit less so than Poems of Days Past, this book also contains some verse translations. A bilingual reprint of the work, with newly rendered translations, is in production stages. |

The Poems of Nakahara Chûya by Paul Mackintosh and Maki Sugiyama This selection of poems from Chûya’s two volumes and his uncollected poems comes from the same translators of Ôe Kenzaburô’s Nip the Bud, Shoot the Kids. The book contains a useful introduction, notes to the poems and a brief bibliography. The translating style is simple and straightforward. Although this method does not always convey the 'poetry' of the original, so to speak, the translations do give some idea of original word order. This book is out of print, but can be found in libraries.

Depilautumn: the poetry of Nakahara Chûya by Kenneth L. Richard This volume is a selection of poems and marks the first book in English devoted exclusively to the poet’s work. Collaborating with poet John Riley, Richard frequently takes a more liberal approach to the translations. Their results are sometimes quite remarkable. The book is unfortunately out of print and very difficult to find.
